We are all familiar with entrepreneurs and enterprise – the art and science (combined with a lot of energy!) of turning ideas into profits in the free market.  Social enterprise is similar – with one important distinction.  That the primary purpose is not profit (however the entity may be either a not-for-profit or a for profit enterprise) but creating a social impact.
